The Rouse Hill Rams Touch Football division has donated $1000 to the Rouse Hill Fire Brigade. Rams Touch Football President Mark Rowe said it meant a lot to give something back to the community.
“We’ve only been going for four years so we’re considered one of the babies in the Rams family. It’s nice to feel like we’re contributing the same as our bigger siblings,” he said. “By doing things locally, we feel like we’re giving back to the place where we live.”
The touch football competition has more than 800 players from eight years of age and up.
The firefighters drove the truck onto the field at Hills Centenary Park with Santa riding along to pass out lollies. Run by volunteers, Mr Rowe said events like this made it worthwhile. “Volunteering can be a thankless job at the best of times so to be able to see the smiles on everyone’s faces out here means a lot,” he said. “To donate to such a worthy cause as these guys is equally important.”
Deputy captain and brigade president Jeffrey Whitton said the community support was important for the brigade. “This brigade has been going 75 years and is all volunteer run,” Mr Whitton said. “It’s why this sort of stuff is fantastic. We’re extremely appreciative.” Mr Whitton said the money would go towards restoring an old fire truck, which was the first diesel truck in the district.
He said the truck is still in use, particularly using its 20-tonne winch to help pull other trucks that get bogged. “It’s very capable and the shire needs it,” Mr Whitton said. “Everything needs some tenderness so we’re bringing the old girl back into working condition.”
